MarginMail vs Canary Mail: two takes on private AI email
Short answer: Canary Mail is a cross-platform mail app for every major provider, with on-device prioritization, cloud AI for writing and summaries, and PGP encryption on its top plan, from free to $100 a year. MarginMail is a native Mac app for Gmail and Google Workspace with no MarginMail server, AI on your Mac or through your own Claude, a calendar built in, and people pages. Where Canary is the better choice
- You need iCloud, Outlook, Exchange or IMAP accounts.
- You need Windows or Android too.
- You need PGP or encrypted send to clients (Pro+), or HIPAA support with a BAA.
- You want a low yearly price with no subscription surprises.
Where MarginMail is the better choice
- You want AI that never leaves your Mac unless it’s your own Claude, with no hosted model of the vendor’s choosing.
- You don’t want read receipts sent from your mail, ever.
- You want a calendar that does more: unanswered invites marked, one-key answers, holds placed when you pick a time.
- You want people pages and notes about what needs you.
Who should choose which
Canary for people who need every provider and platform, or encryption. MarginMail for Gmail and Workspace users on a Mac who want calm, a calendar and their people together, with privacy you can explain in one sentence: no MarginMail server, no analytics, AI on your terms.
FAQ
Does Canary Mail’s AI run on device?
Partly. Canary’s privacy policy says prioritization models are created and stored on your device, while writing, summarizing and chat use hosted models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Google and others. MarginMail’s Request notes run on your Mac with Apple Intelligence; Write it uses your own Claude.
Does Canary Mail send read receipts?
Yes, Canary has its own read receipts, on by default on macOS, and it blocks incoming tracking pixels. MarginMail never sends read receipts.
Does MarginMail support encryption like Canary?
MarginMail uses Gmail’s standard encrypted connections. It doesn’t offer PGP; if you need PGP, Canary’s Pro+ plan does.
Which accounts does MarginMail support?
Gmail and Google Workspace today; other providers come later.
Is MarginMail free?
Yes, during the beta. Pricing will be shared before the beta ends.
