MarginMail vs Mimestream: two native Gmail apps for Mac
Short answer: Mimestream and MarginMail are both native Mac apps that talk straight to Gmail with no sync server in between. Mimestream is a fast, focused Gmail client at $49.99 a year, with no calendar view and no AI. MarginMail adds a calendar in the same window, a page for every person you write to, notes about what needs you, and optional AI on your Mac. MarginMail is free during its beta.

Where Mimestream is the better choice
- You want the lightest, most Gmail-faithful client and nothing else. Mimestream mirrors Gmail’s labels and categories closely and edits Gmail-side filters and vacation replies.
- You need an iPhone app now and you’re an eligible subscriber (it’s in a limited beta).
- You run an older macOS (12 through 15). MarginMail needs macOS 26.
- You want no AI at all, by design. (MarginMail also works fully with AI off, but offers it.)
Where MarginMail is the better choice
- You want your calendar in the same window, not just a banner beside invites.
- You want notes about what needs you: “You asked Ava on Oct 9. No reply in 6 days.”
- You want a memory for people: a page for everyone you write to, with their local time.
- You’d like optional AI that stays private: on-device first, or your own Claude, never a vendor server.
Who should choose which
Pick Mimestream for a pure, polished Gmail client. Pick MarginMail if your days are mail plus meetings plus people, and you want them in one calm window with the same no-server privacy.
FAQ
Does Mimestream have a calendar?
Not a calendar view. It shows your events in a banner beside an invitation so you can check availability, and lets you accept, decline and join. MarginMail has a full calendar in the same window.
Are MarginMail and Mimestream both private?
Both talk directly to Google from your Mac with no sync server in between. MarginMail also runs no analytics in the app. If you turn on AI in MarginMail, it runs on your Mac (Apple Intelligence) or through your own Claude.
Does Mimestream have AI?
No AI features are listed on Mimestream’s site as of October 2026. MarginMail’s AI is optional: Request notes on-device, and Write it with your own Claude.
Does Mimestream have an iPhone app?
It’s in a limited TestFlight beta for subscribers, requiring iOS 26. MarginMail’s iPhone companion comes later.
Which costs less?
MarginMail is free during its beta; pricing comes later. Mimestream is $49.99 a year or $4.99 a month.
Can I use both?
Yes. Both read the same Gmail account, so you can try MarginMail without leaving Mimestream.
