MarginMail vs Outlook for Mac: mail and calendar together, for Google accounts

Short answer: The new Outlook for Mac is free, keeps mail and calendar in one app, supports almost every provider, and adds Copilot with Microsoft 365 plans from $9.99 a month. MarginMail is a native Mac app for Gmail and Google Workspace that also keeps mail and calendar together, adds people pages and notes about what needs you, and keeps AI optional: Apple Intelligence on your Mac, or your own Claude on click. If you live in Microsoft 365, choose Outlook. If you live in Google, try MarginMail.

Where Outlook is the better choice

  • Your company runs on Microsoft 365 or Exchange. MarginMail doesn’t support Microsoft accounts yet.
  • You need Windows, web or Android too.
  • You want Copilot across Word, Excel and Outlook under one subscription.
  • You’re mixing many providers in one app.

Where MarginMail is the better choice

  • You live in Gmail or Google Workspace and want a Mac app built for it.
  • You want AI that starts on your Mac and uses your own Claude only when you click, and never sends.
  • You want people pages and notes about what needs you, not just a focused list.
  • You want live words: type “Tuesday with Ava” and both calendars’ free times appear.

Who should choose which

Outlook for Microsoft 365 workplaces and mixed-provider power users. MarginMail for Google Workspace and Gmail people who want Outlook’s mail-plus-calendar feel in a calm, private, native Mac app.

FAQ

Is Outlook for Mac free?

Yes. The new Outlook for Mac is free; without a Microsoft 365 subscription it’s ad-supported. Copilot features come with Microsoft 365 plans (Personal is $9.99 a month as of October 2026).

Can I use Outlook for Mac with Gmail?

Yes, Outlook can add Google accounts. MarginMail is built only for Google accounts and uses the Gmail and Google Calendar APIs directly from your Mac.

What happened to legacy Outlook for Mac?

Microsoft retired Exchange Web Services in Exchange Online in October 2026, so legacy Outlook for Mac stops working with Exchange Online; Microsoft says most users have moved to new Outlook.

Does MarginMail support Microsoft 365?

Not yet. MarginMail supports Gmail and Google Workspace today; other providers come later.

Does MarginMail have Copilot-style AI?

MarginMail’s AI is optional and private: Apple Intelligence on your Mac finds requests, and your own Claude writes a draft from your notes when you click Write it (only that conversation goes to Anthropic, under your plan). It never sends.
